![]() Her father died - at a school concert Devi was performing in, no less - eight months ago and her dermatologist mother is always on her case. ![]() But Devi’s world is more than just boys and school, as much as she’d like it to be. This is where we meet Devi Vishwakumar (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan), as she prays to various Hindu gods asking for popularity and a boyfriend, no matter how dumb he is. ![]() You’re meant to know where your future is headed, yet you barely know who you are. Cumbersome, in that the initial shock of high school has passed and now the dismantling and creation of an entirely new identity begins to take place. “Never Have I Ever” takes place in the cumbersome transition period known as sophomore year. Effervescent and droll scripts coupled with a vivacious cast of newcomers leads to a series that initially feels haphazard but leans into its awkwardness for an emotionally resonant series you want to see continue. The new drama/comedy from co-creators Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher is the type of teen series aimed at the average teenager whose life might not be filled with orgies, but their problems still make them feel like the entire world is going to implode nonetheless. This isn’t to shade any show in particular, but to illustrate the mountain “ Never Have I Ever” has to climb. It’s very silly, but also fitting, somehow.Netflix appears to be in the coming-of-age business, so much so that it’s easy to overlook one that doesn’t involve superheroes or overwhelming angst, sex, and drugs. This is Tavi on Gossip Girl all over again! It’s a little distracting watching Paxton and Lindsay circle each other as you wonder whether it’s OK for a 22-ish-year-old to date a 19-ish-year-old, while trying to keep in mind they are actually 24 and 32 in real life, and also that this is fake. She looks like a spring chicken compared with Paxton because the actress playing her, Genneya Walton, is only 24, making her seven years younger than Barnet and the same age as some of the kids playing high schoolers on the show. A few episodes in, we meet substitute Lindsay Thompson, introduced as a recent college grad. The show heightens the absurdity of questions surrounding Paxton’s age by having him engage in a flirtation with a very young-looking fellow teacher as the season goes on. Is Natalie Portman a Bad Actress, or Is She Just a Master of Playing One?Ĭonfused Why Your Spotify Wrapped Sound Town Is Burlington, Vermont? So Are the People of Burlington. Why I Hope The Golden Bachelor’s Coolest Contestant Doesn’t “Win” Tonight This strains credulity, but in a funny way: Just as it’s ridiculous that we were ever supposed to believe that Paxton was a high schooler, now it’s ridiculous that we’re supposed to believe that the high school would hire a freshly graduated teenager to supervise other kids, even a teenager who has had the face and body of a Marvel star the whole time. Another reason Devi and Paxton aren’t a good match is because during the fourth season he kind of becomes a teacher at her school, weirdly? No, the show didn’t do any kind of crazy time jump-Paxton briefly goes off to college, but he drops out after not too long, returning to his high school as an assistant swim coach and pseudo-faculty member. ![]() I appreciated this because a high schooler can’t actually date a 32-year-old man, even if that 32-year-old man is unconvincingly playing an 18- or 19-year-old. By Season 4, that love triangle between Devi, Paxton, and Devi’s academic-rival-turned-friend Ben has mostly faded, and Paxton and Devi are basically platonic. ![]()
